Jonas Malinauskas

I’m a Lithuanian artist and designer exploring the senses, specifically scent as a medium for visual outcomes.

My work closely relates to my personal experiences of the world, whether it be relationships, memories or ways of life. And as I develop my personal practice, it led me to work in a variety of spaces – archives, art, production, fashion and design. Helping me feed back these experiences to my designs.

(Un)finished Business

Over 2 years of image collection comes together in an editorial format presented through 4 chapters, based on my own relationship to food and drink. (Un)finished Business is not about eating, but the connection that comes with sitting down together with people at a table. It may involve cigarettes, sweets or conversation, with each element always being important.

My own collected imagery is juxtaposed with paintings from museums and galleries, bringing light to the same topic – which has been explored through different decades. At the end of the book, just as it may be with a meal, there’s only conversation left. The book invites readers to listen to their dining companions and understand the true meaning behind this moment.

Claustraum

A multi-sensorial data visualisation and sonification piece highlighting three churches across Europe tying everything together by smell and memory. Claustrum takes scent data and brings it to life, offering a mix between coherence and confusion with imagery fading between readable pictures of the churches and flying ‘smell’ particles.

It connects three churches – the Grundtvigs Kirke in Copenhagen, Denmark; the Southwark Cathedral in London, UK, and lastly, the Visų Šventųjų Bažnyčia in Vilnius, Lithuania. All bearing an importance in my life – a place I started my life in, a place in my everyday, and a place I dreamt of visiting.

The name comes from the latin word, meaning ’barrier‘ or ’enclosed space‘, a word for the church’s cloisters and the part of our brains that is responsible for consciousness and attention. Therefore, the name creates a seamless string for the olfactory and the ecclesiastical.
