Ruizi Xue

I’m Ruizi Xue, a graphic designer whose practice explores how design can reveal hidden systems and encourage participation through interactive experiences, visual storytelling, and digital platforms. Working across branding, interaction design, moving image, and speculative systems, I am particularly interested in the relationship between technology, behaviour, and social responsibility. My recent projects focus on themes such as digital consumption, communication, and public engagement, using participatory websites, immersive visual systems, and online experiences to shift audiences from passive observation to active involvement. Through research-driven thinking and experimental visual languages, I aim to create design experiences that are both emotionally engaging and critically reflective.

Dialogue HRWFF

Dialogue is a digital campaign and platform concept for the Human Rights Watch Film Festival.

The project began by questioning how online film festivals are often experienced through passive watching and endless scrolling, where audiences consume political and emotional content without actively engaging with it.

Instead of designing the festival as a traditional streaming platform, I wanted to create a more participatory digital environment that encourages audiences to move from watching towards dialogue and collective interaction.

The project combines atmospheric visual systems, motion graphics, live viewing experiences and social media campaigns to create a cinematic but interactive online experience. Diffusion gradients, moving light, dialogue-inspired forms and repeated slogans are used throughout the system to build a softer and more emotional atmosphere across websites, posters and digital campaigns.

Rather than functioning purely as a film archive, the platform becomes a shared viewing space where audiences can collectively watch, respond and participate in wider conversations connected to human rights topics.

Delete To Grow

Delete To Grow is a participatory environmental project exploring how invisible digital behaviours contribute to physical environmental systems.

Although digital files appear immaterial, they rely on cloud infrastructures and data centres that continuously consume energy in the background. As digital accumulation becomes increasingly normalised, the environmental consequences of storing files remain largely invisible within everyday life.

The project investigates how behavioural participation can make these hidden systems more publicly visible. Through posters, QR interactions, website participation and collective visualisation, users are invited to delete unnecessary files, upload proof of deletion and generate flowers within a shared digital garden.

Rather than treating digital decluttering as a private maintenance task, Delete To Grow reframes deletion as a collective ecological action. Individual participation contributes to a continuously expanding shared garden and ranking system, transforming invisible digital consumption into visible collective growth.

Public testing during Earth Week further explored how emotional engagement, participation systems and collective visibility could encourage users to reconsider their relationship with digital storage and environmental responsibility.
