Hello, I’m Xi Deng – a graphic and media designer currently based in London.

My practice is research-led and spans editorial design, publishing, visual systems, typography, print experimentation, and spatial storytelling. I’m interested in how design can translate invisible experiences – such as memory, time, identity, boundaries, and everyday rhythms – into visual forms.

I enjoy moving between digital and physical making, often working through books, printed matter, archives, installations, and material experiments. Through my practice, I explore design not only as communication but also as a way of questioning, recording, and reconstructing experiences.

Deep Dive – Dice Book

‘Deep Dive’ uses dice as its subject of study to explore the relationship between randomness, rules, and the visual system. Through throwing, recording, repeating, and generating, the project transforms unpredictable results into readable structures and images. I hope this book is not just about dice themselves but rather a system constantly operating according to rules, allowing readers to experience the ever-changing relationship between order and chance as they flip through, unfold, and interact with it.

Hyper-Type

‘Hyper-Type’ explores how text systems in digital culture are constantly evolving and expanding. Through visual experiments involving modular structures, repetition, fragmentation, and information overload, the project investigates how typography transcends traditional reading functions and forms a sustainably evolving visual identity system between physical and digital media.

Positioning and Industry: Micro – Movement Archive: Visualising Everyday Rhythm

The core of the P&I project lies in the visualisation of everyday spatial behaviour, exploring how to transform the subtle movements and traces people leave in their daily environments into a systematic visual language. By recording and analysing movement trajectories within home spaces, I gradually constructed a visual system composed of elements such as ‘points, lines, arcs, and the superposition of time’, enabling the observation and understanding of invisible spatial relationships.

In this project, I combined conceptual research with material experimentation, studying how transparency, density, and rhythm affect visual perception through printing on paper with varying transparency and texture. The final result forms a visual language connecting ‘individual observation’ and ‘system design’, helping me establish a methodology centred on ‘research-visualisation-design’ within my industry positioning.

The final outcome of my project presents a hand-bound envelope book (containing 9 envelopes), 9 folds of tracing paper, 9 content pages, and the exploration process of the visual system on three different levels.
